Cut Down on Medical Errors with Electronic Medical Records

A recent article in KPBS noted that while there have been improvements over the last decade, medical errors from medication prescriptions still pose a serious problem.

Hospitals review and approve hundreds of prescription orders a day. In 1999 the Institute of Medicine issued a report estimating that preventable medical errors kill up to 98,000 Americans every year.

According to Dr. Rick Lemoine, medical director of Sharp Memorial's intensive care unit in San Diego, simply having physicians writing to physicians via computer caused adverse drug events from medication to fall by 50 percent in three months.

When implemented properly, electronic medical record technology and e-prescriptions have the ability to help prevent medical errors and improve overall health care standards.
